Maintainable or Maintenance Free battery – Got Confused?

Maintainable or Maintenance free battery - Got Confused

Are you confused about which battery is best suited for your vehicle, a Maintainable or a Maintenance Free battery? A common question faced by many, is which is the better choice? A vehicle owner has the right to choose the best-suited battery for their car because both maintainable and maintenance-free have their advantages over the other.

Maintenance Free Battery

Personal choice or key-ready options?

Identifying the problem and maintaining the battery yourself are the main things you must perceive about Maintainable batteries. It’s about unscrewing the plugs and checking the electrolyte, lead-plates and identifying the problem. The word maintainable underlines the meaning of the service required to maintain the battery for its optimum utilisation. The surface of Maintenance-free batteries has no roughness, holes or lumps, on which you can find a gauge and several holes for gas elimination. Each of the six reservoirs contains a plate and a number of electrolytes, which are secured in a sealed case.

Batteries may differ in the physical state of the electrolyte:

  • Wet cell batteries (conventional batteries with liquid electrolyte);
  • Gel batteries (electrolyte state is achieved with the help of special additives);
  • AGM batteries (technology invented by American engineers, they use absorbed electrolyte instead of the classic electrolyte)

Strengths and Weaknesses – Maintainable or Maintenance Free battery

The lifespan of a maintainable battery is plain to see, and the owners can maintain a battery on their own;

  • The removable cap enables to inspection of the electrolyte level and density.
  • Identify the state of the electrolyte by colour.
  • Identify whether sulphate crystals are formed.
  • Assess the condition of lead plates.

Most importantly in modern cars, there are new requirements related to electronic functions, and the usage of maintainable batteries is very less, unless they are used by the owners of old domestic cars, or by auto passionate who can solve the issues on their own. But this has nothing to do with purchasing a new vehicle or any other equipment.

Maintenance-free batteries are like someone buying a readymade solution which requires less maintenance, and everything is easy to manage, it comes sealed for life from the factory.

  • Built-in hydrometer indicates the state of charge.
  • No liquid leak and corrosion to assemblies.
  • Factory sealed, makes the batteries maintenance-free.
  • Increased battery shelf life
  • Integrated or rope handle for easy transport and installation.

Prices of MF batteries are balanced with their quality and low maintenance charges. Since the electrolyte density and water top-up are impossible in MF batteries, the service life of the battery can’t be extendable on your own, whereas it is ensured by the manufacturer that the battery serves its guaranteed life.

Even though there is no need for frequent maintenance required for MF batteries, it is recommended to check and recharge MF batteries for extended battery life. Also recommended to use automatic devices for recharging MF batteries to avoid battery overcharging.

There are two ways to recharge sealed batteries.

  • Stable current supply (for severely discharged batteries)
  • Stable voltage supply (for partial discharge batteries)
